Tent Permit Plans for Sacramento (Sacramento Fire)
Planning a tented event in Sacramento? Here's what the Sacramento Fire Department (Sacramento Fire) typically asks for, and how we can help you get there faster.
Do I need a permit?
A fire permit is required for tents over 400 sq ft and for canopies open on all sides over 700 sq ft. City Code also regulates tents used for assembly.
What Sacramento Fire asks for
- SFD Tent Application
- Site plan with roads, fire access, parking, cooking and catering, and distances to buildings and property lines
- Tent floor plan with exits, extinguishers, seating and tables, occupant load, fuel-fired equipment, and generators or HVAC
- Staking and anchoring plan with stake length, soil type, and expected wind load
- CSFM-sealed flame certificates
- Certificate of insurance
Anchoring calculations may be requested.
Cooking under or near the tent
Generators and spark- or grease-producing cooking stay at least 20 ft from the tent. Flammable liquids stay at least 50 ft away.
How the process works
- Email the application and plans to SFD Special Events at least 14 business days ahead.
- The permit is issued at the field inspection after approval and fee payment.
- Public events in a city park need a separate City Special Event Permit, applied for 60 days ahead.
Long-term tents may need a building permit.
How long does review take?
Sacramento Fire doesn't publish a set review time, so apply well ahead. Apply at least 14 business days ahead. Fees are set by Sacramento Fire's current schedule.
Code basis
The City adopts the California Fire Code (Chapter 31) with local amendments.
