Tent Permit Plans for San Diego (SDFD)
Planning a tented event in San Diego? Here's what San Diego Fire-Rescue (SDFD) typically asks for, and how we can help you get there faster.
Do I need a permit?
A permit is needed for tents over 400 sq ft. Camping tents, funeral tents, and open-sided tents of 700 sq ft or less (combined) with 12 ft clearance are exceptions.
What SDFD asks for
- Permit application
- Exterior site plan showing tents, distances, a 20 ft fire lane, and any generators or cooking and heating units, with spec sheets
- Floor plan when 50 or more people will be inside
- CSFM flame-resistance certificates
- Structural stability method and details
- A Structural Stability Acknowledgement form, listed on SDFD's Permits & Fees page
Cooking under or near the tent
Cooking and generators must appear on the plans with spec sheets. Cooking or open flame may need an added permit. SDFD posts a Portable Cooking at Special Events bulletin on its Permits & Fees page.
How the process works
- Apply online through the SDFD Customer Portal at least 10 business days ahead.
- Late applications are charged $49 per day. Applications received under 5 business days ahead may not be reviewed.
- Events on City property may also need a City Special Event Permit.
How long does review take?
SDFD doesn't publish a set review time, so apply well ahead. Apply at least 10 business days ahead. Fees are per the City's current schedule. Late applications are charged $49 per day. Fees may change.
Code basis
Municipal Code chapter 5, article 11 (San Diego Fire Code) adopts the 2025 California Fire Code with local amendments, effective Feb 28, 2026.
