Tent Permit Plans for San Francisco (SFFD)
Planning a tented event in San Francisco? Here's what the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) typically asks for, and how we can help you get there faster.
Do I need a permit?
Most tents over 200–400 sq ft need an SFFD permit. Open-sided tents are exempt only if each is 700 sq ft or less, multiple tents total 700 sq ft or less without a 12 ft fire break, and there's 12 ft clearance to structures and other tents. SFFD uses one combined construction/operational permit. Tents over 400 sq ft also need proof of liability insurance.
What SFFD asks for
- Two copies of a site plan (at least 11x17)
- Structure type, size, address, dates and duration
- Installer and sponsor
- Occupant load and use
- Distances to buildings, property lines, other tents, vehicles and engines, exits, hydrants, FDCs, and the public way
- Location and quantity of all anchoring or ballast
Cooking under or near the tent
Cooking tents are 20 ft from other tents. A CSFM flame-resistance certificate is submitted and kept on site, and NO SMOKING signs are posted (SFFD bulletin 5.10).
How the process works
- Apply in person at the SF Permit Center, Bureau of Fire Prevention, 49 South Van Ness, 2nd floor, at least 5 business days ahead. Late filings may be charged overtime.
- Larger structures may need an engineer's inspection letter.
How long does review take?
SFFD doesn't publish a set review time, so apply well ahead; SFFD's minimum is 5 business days. Fees are set by SFFD's current schedule.
Code basis
2025 San Francisco Fire Code, Chapters 1, 10 and 31.
