Tent Permit Plans for San Jose (SJFD)

Planning a tented event in San Jose? Here's what the San Jose Fire Department (SJFD) typically asks for, and how we can help you get there faster.

Do I need a permit?

Most event tents and canopies need an SJFD permit. Tents, canopies and membrane structures need an SJFD Special Event Application, filed 30 days before the event by email to [email protected].

What SJFD asks for

Submit a site plan and flame-resistance certificate, per SJFD's Tent Standards. Those standards also include separate guidelines for propane, food trucks, outdoor events and safety plans.

How the process works

  1. File the SJFD Special Event Application 30 days before the event.
  2. Park events go through Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services. Street and private-property events go through the Office of Cultural Affairs.

How long does review take?

SJFD doesn't publish a set review time, so apply well ahead. File 30 days before the event. The SJFD Tent Permit is $948 (includes plan review/inspection). SJFD plan review is $280/hr. The Cultural Affairs "Private Property Tent Only" fee is $477. See SJFD city costs. Fees may change.

Code basis

San José Fire Code, Municipal Code chapter 17.12, adopting the California Fire Code with local amendments.

We prepare PE-stamped tent plan sets built for SJFD review. Draw your tent layout on the aerial map, and we'll send you a draft preview with the exact price before you pay.
